‘Features that go further!’ - Apple’s latest boldly-stated headline relating to their most recent Mobile OS release, iOS 5.
iOS 5 is the fifth generation iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple TV operating system. Based on the same core as previous releases and also the Mac OSx operating system, the latest version adds:
Notifications, iMessage, Newsstand, Reminders, Twitter and a boatload of other new features ranging from the interesting, such as the aforementioned Twitter integration and iMessage infrastructure, to the “What took you so long?”, such as using your device’s camera from the lock screen and tabbed browsing in Safari.
If you use iPhones in your company, then you will be familiar with the handiness of many of the features and applications. Here at Tanka, we think that there is one upgrade more useful than the others:
Notifications
Notifications in iOS today are interruptions more than helpful notifications: a text box pops up to tell you, for example, that a text message has arrived – and when you tap it to dismiss the notification, it’s gone forever. In iOS 5, however, a new Notifications Center screen will gather missed calls, voicemails, text messages, push notifications from the App Store, and other such alerts. Sliding your finger down from any screen will bring up the Notifications Center, and swiping across a notification will take you to the relevant app. As many critics have already pointed out, this has been a feature on Android for quite some time!
The benefit of this, to our clients, is that they will be able to push notifications from their Applications to a user’s homescreen.
